So, what are vegan sweets? First of all, it is worth to start explaining what vegan actually means and what vegans eat.
Veganism is a type of diet that excludes meat, eggs, dairy products, and all other animal-derived ingredients. In general vegans only eat plant-based food. Many vegans also do not eat foods that are processed using animal products, such as refined white sugar, some wines and juices. Vegan refers then to either a person who follows this lifestyle and way of eating.
There is some debate about whether certain foods, such as honey, should be excluded from a vegan diet, and vegans have different views about this. Therefore, if you are cooking for other vegans, it is best to ask your guests beforehand about there prefrences.
Most vegans extend the definition of veganism to go beyond just food and will avoid leather products and will be very conscious about the household products they use or buy.
A central element of veganism is obviously the food. Basically, vegan sweets do not contain any eggs or dairy products. It has taken quite long for vegan food manufacturers to come up with some good gummy bear and chocolate alternatives, but the selection has massively improved in recent years. You can now already buy delicious vegan cakes in supermarkets! This was unthinkable 5 years ago. As food chemists develop new ways of doing things and ways of replacing traditional ingredients, the selection will grow further. Many non-vegan ingredients, however, can be easily replaced with natural vegan ingredients. Eggs, for example, can easily be replaced with carob powder. Milk can be replaced with plant "milk", which can even be made at home. The possibilities for vegan sweets are limitless - it all comes down to how creative you can be!
